The Chinese Dragon Boat Festival, observed on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month (May 31st in 2025), is a 2,000-year-old tradition honoring poet Qu Yuan. There are three main ways to celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival in our Liuyang city.
Dragon Boat Racing - Teams paddle colorful long boats to drumbeats, reenacting the rescue attempt for Qu Yuan. A large-scale dragon boat race was held on the Liuyang River. Multiple teams raced to the sound of drums, attracting tens of thousands of citizens to watch and show the spirit of unity and hard work.
Zongzi - Pyramid-shaped sticky rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves, originally thrown into rivers to feed Qu Yuan's spirit. During this festival, almost every household eats zongzi of various flavors here. In addition, many communities organize competitions among residents to show their zongzi-making skills and send zongzi to lonely elderly people to express their love.
The Sky Theater Dragon Boat Festival Fireworks Show: With the theme of "The most memorable is the Dragon Boat Festival", fireworks present the seal script of "Li Sao", the light and shadow of dragon boat racing, the phoenix nirvana and other scenes, combined with blue special effect fireworks to simulate the rushing river, creating an audio-visual feast. Although it was raining, our fireworks were still beautiful and lighting up the whole city.
