2026 Liuyang Lantern Festival: A Blend of Tradition and Fun

The Lantern Festival, falling on the 15th day of the first lunar month (March 3, 2026 this year), marks the end of the Spring Festival celebrations in China. In Liuyang, a city renowned as the "Hometown of Fireworks and Firecrackers," this festival is a vibrant showcase of traditional folk culture and modern festive experiences, drawing locals and tourists alike to immerse themselves in the joyful atmosphere .

The main event of the 2026 Liuyang Lantern Festival is held at the Xianggan Border (Liuyang) Cultural and Art Exchange Center from 14:00 to 20:00 on March 3. This venue serves as a hub for a variety of activities, blending cultural heritage with interactive fun, suitable for families, friends, and solo visitors to enjoy the festive spirit .

Traditional Folk Activities

Dragon Dance for Good Fortune. Dragon dance is the highlight of Liuyang's Lantern Festival. Dragon dance teams from various towns and villages parade through the streets, even entering households to perform the "dragon greeting" ritual. Accompanied by the deafening sound of firecrackers and drums, the writhing dragons symbolize the driving away of evil spirits and the bringing of good luck, prosperity, and a bountiful harvest for the new year.

Lantern Riddles: A Test of Wisdom. At venues like the Liuyang Museum and Library, nearly 1,000 lantern riddles are displayed, covering a wide range of topics including Liuyang's local culture, historical allusions, and Year of the Horse elements. Participants can rack their brains to solve the riddles, and those who succeed will win exciting prizes. 

Savoring Traditional Delicacies. The festival is also a feast for the taste buds. Traditional food stalls offer a variety of local snacks, such as glutinous rice balls (tangyuan), which symbolize family reunion, crispy rice cakes (dongmi gao), delicate sugar paintings, sweet and sour candied hawthorns, and fluffy cotton candy. For those who prefer a modern twist, trendy drinks like coconut latte are also available, catering to diverse culinary preferences and allowing visitors to savor the flavors of both tradition and innovation .

Handicraft Workshops: Unleash Your Creativity. Six handicraft experience zones are set up at the main venue, offering activities like hand-painting lanterns, paper-cutting, bell(rubbing bells), making firework-shaped pipe cleaners, Year of the Horse zodiac painting, and museum diamond painting. Both children and adults can participate in these workshops, using their hands to create unique festive souvenirs.

Fun Games: Laughter and Joy. Interactive games add an extra layer of fun to the festival. In the "Golden Shovel for Good Fortune" game, participants use a designated shovel to scoop red envelopes within a limited time, with each envelope containing surprises and gifts. Other games like "rolling glutinous rice balls" and "throwing glutinous rice balls" allow people to experience the traditional ways of preparing for the Lantern Festival while enjoying the joy of competition and interaction .

Cultural Education: Dialect Nursery Rhymes. To promote local culture, a special Liuyang dialect nursery rhyme class is held, taught by a non-genetic inheritor of Liuyang dialect. Children can learn interesting nursery rhymes in the authentic local dialect, feeling the unique rhythm and charm of their hometown's language.
